About Us
Our Story
We are Oksana and Oleksii, a husband-and-wife duo from Ukraine. Our brand, Light Craft Family, is based in London, where our family moved in 2022.
We met in 2016, fell in love while working for the same Ukrainian electrical supplier in Kyiv, and were married within a year. We always dreamed of creating our own business, drawing on the skills and experience we built working in import/export, electrical retail and e-commerce. When we became parents, our entrepreneurial ambitions naturally turned towards products for families and children. Our vision was clear: to create sustainable, plastic-free toys and homeware.
In 2022, when Ukraine was invaded, our business dream became a lifeline. Oksana fled to the UK with eighteen-month-old Yeva and fourteen-year-old Artem in May 2022, three months after the Russian invasion made it too dangerous for them to stay. They were separated from Oleksii for more than a year and a half. The war severely disrupted the economy and left many workshops without orders or income. Through friends, we learned that a local workshop in Zhytomyr — which made wooden tables and other timber products — was struggling, and many people were at risk of losing their jobs. We saw an opportunity to work with them and support local industry. Oleksii began designing a range of oak wooden nightlights that could be produced in the workshop, and he set about creating the first prototypes.
For Oleksii, this was not just a passion project but also a way to stay productive and positive during an extremely difficult time. Being apart was hard for the whole family, but collaborating on this idea helped us feel connected.
In 2023, Oksana visited Oleksii in Ukraine and returned with a very special lighting design featuring a Ukrainian flag and map cut into the oak light. She wanted to share these with other newly arrived Ukrainian families who were looking for meaningful gifts to express gratitude to those who had helped and supported them in the UK. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and gave us confidence that our bedside lights could find a wider market here.
We then began working with TERN (The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network) to develop our business and brand. Hard work, expertise and creativity came together to create Light Craft Family — handcrafted LED nightlights that cast a warm glow in familiar shapes. Our mission is simple: to make any space feel like home, just as our family feels at home wherever we are together.
From the beginning, our lights have been made only from high-quality Ukrainian oak wood and fitted with warm LED lights that do not disrupt sleep. We worked with a local Ukrainian workshop to produce patterned wooden templates, after which Oleksii and his father handcrafted the lights — assembling and polishing each one by hand to ensure quality. The finely polished oak surface makes each lamp spill- and scratch-resistant. This is a small, slow, family-built brand that pours love into every high-quality, handcrafted piece.
After our family reunited in London in autumn 2023, we began looking for a way for Oleksii to assemble the wooden templates from Ukraine here in the UK. We remain committed to sourcing our oak wood from Ukraine — it’s our way of supporting our people, our economy and our country through difficult times. We are delighted now to have access to a woodworking factory in London, which has opened new opportunities for creating customised designs and new homeware collections.

How We Make Our Lights
Our journey began in the summer of 2022, in a small wooden workshop near Kyiv. At that time, Russia’s invasion had shattered normal life. Our family was separated: Oleksii stayed near Kyiv while Oksana moved to London with the children.
One day, Oleksii met an old friend who worked in a woodworking shop that was struggling to survive, with too few orders to continue. Together, they decided to support each other. Oleksii came up with the idea of creating a wooden night lamp. With just a little material and a lot of determination, they built the first prototype. Step by step, the idea grew into reality.
The workshop produced delicate cutouts on a small CNC machine, while Oleksii set up a tiny workshop at home, in the loft under the roof, where he would hand-finish and carefully assemble each light. During that first year, we experimented constantly, learning through trial and error — and somewhere along the way, we discovered our true love for the craft.
When Oleksii finally reunited with the family in London, he brought with him enough stock to start sharing our lights on the UK market just before Christmas. But we soon realised that to grow, we needed more stability: blackouts, workshop access, and supplies disruption of materials in Ukraine made it clear that we had to bring manufacturing under our own control.
That’s when we found BLOQs — a public-access factory in London. With its CNC machines, laser cutters, and a creative community of makers, BLOQs gave us the tools to turn our ideas into reality here in the UK.
Today, our lamps are the result of this transnational collaboration: designed with love, made from sustainable wood, combining Ukrainian craftsmanship and UK opportunities. Each one is hand-assembled by us, as a family, with the same spirit of resilience that shaped our beginnings.
And now, the story has become even more family-driven: Oleksii’s father — who has always been handy and was the one to teach his son these skills — has joined us, creating unique lamps from raw pieces of wood. His creativity strengthens our connection across generations, people, and countries, making Light Craft Family not just a business, but a living bridge between the past and the future.
